Reimbursement of Hospice Services in the Nursing Home
Hospice is paid a per diem amount from Medicare or Medicaid for its services. Hospice services in the nursing home can only be provided in a non-skilled bed.
Medicaid continues to pay for room and board when hospice
is initiated in a nursing home, as long as the patient continues
to qualify. There will not be any increases in out-of-pocket costs for room and board due to admission to hospice.
Medicaid requires that hospice bill for the room and board provided by the facility. Hospice, in turn, pays the nursing home for the patient's room and board. Medicare does not pay for room and board.
